Pilz Produce at Hillcrest

Satsuma Mandarins

Steve on the ranchOur Heritage Satsuma mandarin trees were planted in the early 1960's by Steve's Grandfather, Edmund Pilz. The southern exposure on our ranch provides the perfect climate and conditions for citrus production. The Pilz Produce at Hillcrest ranch has about 12 acres in delicious, sweet, seedless Satsuma mandarins.

Mandarins Make
the National News

Our tree-ripened, easy-to-peel fruit is in high demand. In fact, Placer County mandarins have recently made the rounds on national news stations and newspapers because of their naturally occurring decongestants! That's right - mandarins are proven to help keep you healthy! We are proud to say that people have been bringing their friends and families to visit our ranch for several generations.

AS OF 11/22/11 WE ARE SOLD OUT UNTIL POSSIBLY AFTER DECEMBER 15

CLOSED AT THE FARM TO DRIVE UP CUSTOMERS.  2011 Mandarin Crop extremely light for us.  Appointments only for long time customers. We will be at the farmers markets we attend with some fruit.  We don't expect to have too much fruit at all this year.  We will start to have some fruit at the markets around December 1st (ONLY IN SMALL AMOUNTS).

mandarins are easy to peel                                                                                                                                    Most mandarin trees, as they get older bear fruit in alternating years, meaning one year we a large crop and one year we have a small crop.  The 2011 year has turned out to be quite the crazy year! The mandarin harvest of last year went into the early spring until the rain and hail destroyed the remainder. The rain and hail kept coming which interfered with the bloom. Then the water canal that supplies our water broke. Fortunately it was a cool, wet spring. This helped keep the trees alive until the canal was fixed. And our water system is still not quite done. With the multitude of problems this year, the trees decided not to set much of a crop at all!
